Hikers Trapped in Avakas Gorge Rescued by Fire Service

Two groups of hikers found themselves in danger in the Avakas Gorge in Paphos when the water level in the river suddenly rose, trapping a total of 31 people. The Fire Service mobilized immediately and, in two successive operations, managed to safely rescue all the hikers. The first operation involved 26 people, while the second involved 5. All rescued individuals were in good health. The first call to the Fire Service was made at 13:13, reporting the entrapment of 26 hikers due to the rising water level. Firefighters used rescue ropes and life jackets to transport them to a safe area. Three hours later, the Fire Service received a new call for 5 trapped hikers in the same gorge. Again, the rescue operation was successful, with firefighters using the same equipment to rescue them. In addition, two people who were in a different part of the gorge managed to get out on their own, without needing help. All rescued individuals were in good health. The Fire Service advised hikers to be particularly careful when visiting gorges, especially after rainfall, due to the risk of rising water levels.
