Highway Collapses in Portugal Due to Rain. 15 Dead

A devastating storm in Portugal has led to the collapse of a highway, causing at least 15 deaths and widespread flooding. Authorities ordered the evacuation of approximately 3,000 residents as the Mondego River overflowed due to heavy rainfall. The collapse of a section of the A1 highway, connecting Lisbon to Porto, occurred despite the area being closed preventatively. The Portuguese Minister of Internal Administration, Maria Lucia Amaral, resigned following criticism of the government's inadequate response to the floods. Prime Minister Luís Montenegro visited the area to oversee crisis management efforts. Authorities warned of the risk of new floods from the Aguieira dam. The situation was described as extremely unstable, with some areas isolated. Satellite images show increased water levels in the Tagus River. Evacuations were also carried out in villages due to the risk of landslides. Portugal has been hit by a series of storms in recent weeks, with Storm Christine causing extensive damage. The government is under pressure to take measures to repair the damage and prevent similar disasters in the future.
