High Dust Levels in the Atmosphere Today

Today, Tuesday, high concentrations of dust are being observed in the atmosphere throughout Cyprus, according to measurements from the Labour Inspection Department. The highest values were recorded in Paphos (172.9 μg/m3) and Larnaca (163.4 μg/m3), while lower values were recorded in Zygi (80.5 μg/m3) and Agia Marina Xyliatou (70.9 μg/m3). The Department advises the public, especially vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and patients, to avoid staying in open spaces until the air quality improves. Furthermore, the Department calls on employers to take the necessary protection measures for their employees working in outdoor areas, such as providing appropriate personal protective equipment. Dust is defined as inhalable suspended particles in the atmosphere with a diameter of less than 10 μm (PM10). According to current legislation, the average daily dust concentration should not exceed 50 μg/m3. Today's measurements in several areas far exceed this limit, highlighting the need to protect public health. The phenomenon of dust is due to various factors, such as sandstorms from neighboring countries and local weather conditions. The authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will inform the public of any changes.
