Heated Session on the Social Support Agency - Questions about Shipping Contributions Reaching €1 Million

The House Control Committee held a heated discussion on the findings of the Auditor General's 2023 Annual Report regarding the Independent Social Support Agency. Committee members requested answers from the government regarding potential issues of entanglement and conflicts of interest. Auditor General Andreas Papakonstantinou stated that the audit was regulatory-administrative and identified weaknesses in registers and procedures, which have largely been corrected. The five-fold increase in contributions and the three-fold increase in expenditures in 2024 were highlighted, as well as the origin of revenues from major economic entities, which raised concerns about potential peculiarities in relations with the state. The Audit Office proposed greater transparency and stricter safeguards.
