Head of MIT: Africa a 'Strategic Priority' for Turkey

Turkey has designated Africa as a strategic priority, according to statements by the head of MIT, Ibrahim Kalin. In an article, Kalin describes Africa as a field of growing strategic competition and presents Turkey's approach to addressing crises and threats. MIT, as he states, combines traditional 'state logic' with modern technology, leveraging human, technical, and open-source intelligence in conjunction with artificial intelligence. Kalin emphasizes that the Western-centric model of power is being challenged and that the international system is failing to offer fair and sustainable solutions, leading to new searches focused on the Global South. He cites specific Turkish operations in Africa, such as stabilization in Libya, the fight against terrorism in Somalia, and operations in Sudan, which have attracted the attention of many countries. This public statement is considered significant as it marks the maturity of Turkey's presence in Africa at the institutional level, where it no longer needs to be concealed but recognized. Turkey's turn towards Africa began a decade ago, with increasing economic investments, diplomatic missions, and cultural exchanges. The volume of trade between Turkey and Africa has increased significantly, almost eightfold since 2003, reaching $40.7 billion in 2022. Simultaneously, the number of Turkish embassies in Africa has risen from 12 in 2002 to 44 today. Analysts describe Turkey as one of the most consistent and influential external actors on the continent, combining hard power, education, and commercial penetration.
