An illustrator from Florida, Patrick Girouard, and his then-partner, Debra Kuzik, created a unique bathroom floor using approximately 10,000 pennies. The idea came about during a bathroom renovation, and Girouard was inspired by mosaic art pieces he had created in the past. They used a special fiberglass mesh with an adhesive backing to attach the pennies in squares, with each square containing 99 pennies. After placing the tiles, they used glue to secure them to the floor. The process was time-consuming, but the result was a striking and durable floor. The total cost of the pennies was $97, and they also added grout and a protective sealant. Girouard stated that they were very pleased with the result, as the floor was easy to maintain and gave the space a warm feeling. Even if a penny came loose, it was easy to replace.
