HCAA Restores Communications Following Interference at Athens FIR

The Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA) announced the full restoration of a technical issue that affected communications within the Athens FIR. The problem, which manifested as “noise” on multiple frequencies, appeared to originate from telecommunications infrastructure. Frequencies and telephone communication systems returned to full operation at 17:00 local time, with the cancellation of the relevant NOTAM. Air traffic returned to normal levels at 17:45, and flight safety was fully ensured throughout the incident management. The causes of the problem are being thoroughly investigated by the HCAA's electronic engineers, as it is an unprecedented incident in terms of scale and form. Simultaneously, checks are being carried out on all repeater stations, and a frequency spectrum control flight is being conducted with an HCAA aircraft, with the assistance of the National Telecommunications and Post Commission (EETT). The HCAA is working closely with the Hellenic Telecommunications Organization (OTE) to fully document the incident and take preventive measures. The investigation focuses on the exact source of the noise and the potential impact of telecommunications infrastructure on air communications. The incident caused concern within the aviation community, but the HCAA's prompt response and effective risk management ensured that there were no serious consequences for flight safety. The HCAA is committed to continuously improving communication systems and preventing similar incidents in the future.
