Hartsiotis: Recent President-UNSG Contact Encouraging for Dialogue Restart

Presidential Commissioner Marios Hartsiotis expressed his assessment that the recent meeting between the President of the Republic and the UN Secretary-General creates positive prospects for the resumption of talks on the Cyprus issue. He emphasized the UN's commitment to restarting negotiations, with the aim of reaching a comprehensive solution. The Republic of Cyprus remains steadfastly committed to seeking a solution based on UN resolutions and the European acquis, utilizing all diplomatic means to strengthen international support. Mr. Hartsiotis made the statements during the annual doxology of the Embassy of the Republic of Cyprus in Athens for the anniversary of the start of the EOKA struggle. He referred to the historical symbolism of the ceremony, recalling that Athens was the place where the "Oath of the 12" was given in 1953, preparing for the start of the EOKA struggle. Mr. Hartsiotis underlined the deep historical and national relationship between Greece and Cyprus, describing their relationship as more than just a relationship between two states, but as a relationship of identity, history and common destiny. He stressed the importance of common historical consciousness and initiatives to highlight it in schools in Greece. Finally, Mr. Hartsiotis acknowledged Greece's longstanding support for Cyprus, emphasizing that coordination and cooperation between the two countries are a factor of stability. He expressed his belief that Greece's support remains the strongest weapon in the effort to liberate and reunite Cyprus, 52 years after the Turkish invasion.
