Halloumi at Risk: Concerns Grow Over Future of Cyprus's Iconic Cheese

There is growing concern for the future of Halloumi PDO cheese, as 2029 approaches and the requirement for an increase in the amount of goat and sheep milk in production to 51% looms. Despite efforts to strengthen goat and sheep farming in recent years, achieving this goal appears difficult. The Minister of Agriculture had previously proposed reducing the required amount of goat and sheep milk due to limited production. The government has allocated €30 million to support goat and sheep farmers, but the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in the occupied territories creates new problems. The management of the situation is considered inadequate, with responsibility shared by the government and farmers. Safeguarding Halloumi, as Cyprus's second-largest export product, is crucial for the economy and employment. Halloumi is an important part of Cyprus's cultural heritage, and failure to preserve it would be a national loss. Seriousness and national consciousness are required to address the situation and save Halloumi.
