Refugee Committee Monitors Foreclosures – Kettieros: Unacceptable to Risk Refugee Homes

The Parliamentary Committee on Refugees re-examined the issue of foreclosures on homes in refugee settlements, following the expiration of the previous suspension period. Committee President Nikos Kettieros stressed the seriousness of the situation, stating that the debt buying companies have followed the Committee’s instructions. However, there is still a risk for borrowers in self-housing settlements, as in some cases people are forced to sell occupied properties to save their refugee homes. Mr. Kettieros also denounced serious financial imbalances in the debt companies. The Committee also examined a confidential letter from the Central Bank stating that the debt buying companies paid €3.2 billion to acquire loans worth €16.7 billion, with significant profits and high interest rates in certain cases. The Committee requested that the full details be submitted to the Central Bank to further investigate the matter.
