Guterres: 'New Moment of Opportunity' for Cyprus After Years of Stalemate

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has described recent informal meetings on the Cyprus issue as a 'new moment of opportunity' after years of stalemate. In his report on the Good Offices mission, he states that the meetings between the leaders of the two communities and the commitment of the guarantor powers (Greece, Turkey, and the United Kingdom) indicate progress. Particular emphasis is placed on the joint meeting of the leaders on December 11, where key political issues were discussed and a commitment to a solution with political equality, as defined by UN Security Council resolutions, was reaffirmed. Guterres calls on both sides to strengthen confidence-building initiatives, such as opening new crossing points, and praises the role of the Technical Committees.
