Grivas' Revelation: Why the EOKA Struggle Didn't Begin on March 25, 1955

The diary of Georgios Grivas Digenis reveals that the start of the EOKA struggle was not initially scheduled for March 25, 1955. The change of date was decided for security and operational efficiency reasons, to ensure the surprise of the British. Archbishop Makarios preferred March 25th, but Grivas and Azinas had reservations due to the possibility of information leaks and the better use of winter weather conditions and long nights to cover operations. The diary states that postponing the date would ensure the preservation of surprise, as until then the British had not taken precautionary measures and government and military buildings were lightly guarded. The final decision to start the struggle on April 1, 1955, was made with a view to better organization and ensuring surprise, which was considered a critical factor for the success of EOKA's initial actions.
