Green Light for Mercosur with the 'Good Morning' of the Cypriot Presidency

The 'green light' for the signing of the EU-Mercosur trade agreement was given by the European Commission and the member states, while the agreement is at the heart of mass agricultural mobilizations in many EU countries. The approval constitutes the first substantial political act of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU, causing strong reactions as it also opens the way for provisional application before the position of the European Parliament. Thousands of farmers have taken to the streets in countries such as France, Belgium, Spain, Italy, Cyprus and Greece, denouncing that the EU is sacrificing agricultural production and their income in favor of multinationals. The European United Left – Nordic Green Left (The Left) denounces the process as undemocratic, emphasizing that the European Parliament is being bypassed in an agreement with serious social, environmental and economic consequences. The agreement provides for the abolition of tariffs on most products traded between the EU and Latin America, with savings of around 4 billion euros annually for large industrial groups. At the same time, it ensures access to cheap energy and raw materials for European businesses. However, the price for the agricultural world is expected to be heavy, as it will lead to massive imports of cheap products from Latin America, with lower environmental requirements and practices prohibited in the EU. The battle for the approval of the agreement is now moving to the European Parliament, where a vote is expected on a resolution calling for a referral to the EU Court of Justice.
