Greek FIR Faces Communication Issues, Causing Flight Delays

An unprecedented technical issue affected communications within the Athens FIR, causing significant flight delays to and from Greek airports on Sunday. The Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA) is investigating the problem, which appears to be caused by “noise” on multiple frequencies, and is not attributed to a cyberattack. Initial indications point to a problem with telecommunications infrastructure, although OTE assures that the circuits it provides are functioning normally. Experts suspect a malfunction in the HCAA’s older equipment, while the Air Traffic Controllers Association highlights the outdated and inadequately maintained state of the communication systems. A plan to upgrade the air navigation systems is already underway, with a completion target of 2028.
