Google Under Scrutiny by EU Commission Over Android Interoperability and AI

The European Commission has launched two fact-finding procedures to ensure that Google complies with its obligations under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The first procedure concerns the interoperability of Android with hardware and software features, while the second concerns the sharing of data from Google Search with third-party search engine providers. The Commission is examining how Google should provide third-party artificial intelligence (AI) service providers with equally effective access to the same features as those available to its own services, such as Gemini. It is also examining the scope, anonymization method and access terms to Google Search data, in order to ensure access to anonymized data for third-party providers. The Commission will publish preliminary findings within three months and complete the procedure within six months. These procedures do not prejudge a finding of compliance or non-compliance and do not affect the Commission's powers to impose fines in the event of non-compliance. Google had until March 7, 2024, to fully comply with its obligations under the DMA.
