Global INTERPOL Operation Results in Thousands of Arrests. Cyprus Participates – Detailed Information

INTERPOL conducted the global operation Liberterra III, involving 119 countries, including Cyprus, from November 10th to 21st, 2023. The operation aimed to combat human trafficking, illegal immigration and other related crimes. During the operation, 4,414 potential victims of human trafficking were identified and protected, and 12,992 irregular migrants were detected. A total of 3,744 suspects were arrested, with over 1,800 linked to human trafficking and migrant smuggling offenses. More than 14,000 police officers were mobilized for the operation, conducting patrols, targeted checks and strengthening border controls. Over 720 new investigations were also launched. INTERPOL Secretary General Valdecy Urquiza stated that the operation highlights the strong cooperation between countries, but also the need to adapt to the evolving tactics of criminal networks. These networks exploit new routes, digital platforms and vulnerable populations. The Cyprus Police actively participated in the operation, conducting checks at airports and along the green line. During the checks, 55 irregular migrants were detected and three individuals were arrested for attempting to enter Cyprus with forged travel documents.
