Germany Has the Densest Motorway Network, According to Eurostat

According to Eurostat data for 2024, Germany has the densest motorway network in the European Union, with 169 km of motorways per 1,000 km2 of area in Bremen. Cyprus recorded 29.41 km of motorways per 1,000 km2. Motorway networks tend to be concentrated in urban areas and industrial zones. The Netherlands (South Holland and Utrecht) and Hungary (Budapest) follow Germany in network density. Twenty regions in the EU have no motorways, most of which are islands, including six in France and three in Greece. The largest expansion of the motorway network in recent years has been recorded in Spain (Andalusia). Regarding railway networks, Berlin and Hamburg in Germany have the most extensive networks, while Greece has the lowest densities in three regions (Peloponnese, Western Macedonia, and Thessaly).
