Geopolitical Risks and AI Under Supervisory Scrutiny

The Eurozone's banking supervision is focusing on two key areas for the period 2026-2028: strengthening banks' ability to withstand external shocks and enhancing their operational capacity, particularly in relation to information and communication technologies (ICT). Increasing geopolitical uncertainty, climate-related crises, and technological innovation pose significant challenges to the banking sector. The supervision focuses on improving banks' resilience to geopolitical risks and macroeconomic uncertainties, as well as ensuring their operational resilience and ICT capabilities to avoid disruptions to critical functions. This includes evaluating banks' digital strategies and risk management practices, including those related to artificial intelligence. The authors point out that government measures previously used to address banking crises may no longer be effective due to high public spending and fiscal constraints. Therefore, supervision must focus on preventing and addressing risks early on. Overall, the ECB's banking supervision is adapting to new challenges and focusing on strengthening the resilience and operational capacity of banks to protect financial stability in the Eurozone.
