GBL and GHB: What is the “Recreational Drug” Detected in the Water Cooler?

Published January 8, 2026, 07:23

Professor of Pharmacy Christos Petrou clarified the nature of the substance detected in a water cooler and linked to a poisoning incident on the Alpha Kalimera show. The substance is GBL (gamma-butyrolactone), an industrial solvent that converts to GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyric acid) in the body, a powerful central nervous system depressant. GHB is known as a “date rape drug” and is used in chemsex, causing euphoria in low doses, but can lead to severe sedation, loss of consciousness, or even death in higher doses. Mixing it with alcohol is particularly dangerous. The substance is cheap and easily accessible, while its detection in the body is difficult due to its rapid elimination.
