Gaps Identified in Fire Prevention and Response – Longinos' Voice in First Coordination Meeting

The first coordination meeting for fire services under the new National Fire Coordinator, Nikos Longinos, highlighted both positive aspects and gaps in readiness for the fire season. Mr. Longinos explained that the National Mechanism will be activated in crisis situations or uncontrolled fires, with coordination of ground and air forces, while the Inter-Ministerial Committee will be involved in cases requiring external assistance. Despite the readiness expressed by the services, weaknesses were identified, mainly in Civil Defense regarding evacuations and public information, which led to heated discussions. Services were called upon to review their plans and correct the gaps, while daily contact with the Meteorological Service will be maintained for early preparedness. 11 aerial vehicles are expected to be available on May 1st, while firefighters have begun contacts with community leaders to prevent a recurrence of incidents like last year in the Troodos Mountains, with emphasis on fire zones, cleaning of uninhabited houses and checking hydrants.
