At least 31 migrants and refugees have lost their lives when a vessel attempting to reach Europe from Gambia capsized on January 1st. The initial death toll of 7 has been revised upwards, with fears of even more missing. The boat had departed on December 31st carrying over 200 people, destined for the Spanish Canary Islands. 102 people were rescued, 23 of whom remain hospitalized.
