Greece Aims to Become Southern Europe's Gas Hub

Greece is positioning itself to become a key entry point for liquefied natural gas (LNG) imports into Europe, aiming to replace Russian gas, according to a Financial Times report. Athens is leveraging its geographical location, expansion of LNG infrastructure, and close ties with the US. The EU's dependence on Russian gas is already declining, with US LNG now accounting for 60% of the EU's LNG imports. Environment and Energy Minister Stavros Papastavrou emphasizes the need for a complete decoupling from Russian fossil fuels and strengthening energy cooperation with the US. Through the Revithoussa LNG terminal, Greece has already begun facilitating the flow of American gas to the Balkans and other European countries. The country seeks to play a crucial role in Europe's energy security, capitalizing on the crisis triggered by the war in Ukraine.
