FT: George Prokopiou, the 'Pirate' of the Strait of Hormuz Betting on Risk

Greek shipowner George Prokopiou and his companies continue to operate in the Strait of Hormuz, despite increased tensions in the region due to the conflict in the Middle East. This strategy is considered bold, as most shipowners avoid passing through the area due to the risks. Prokopiou's Dynacom Tankers continues to operate routes in the area, taking advantage of the high freight rates recorded, which can reach $500,000 per day for a VLCC carrying oil to China. However, this activity is accompanied by significant risks, such as attacks on ships and loss of sailors. According to the Financial Times, Dynacom ships are disabling tracking transponders while passing through the Strait, reducing the visibility of their movements. George Prokopiou is one of the most powerful shipowners globally, with a group managing over 150 ships and another 85 under construction. The company has faced criticism for transporting Russian oil after the invasion of Ukraine, but its activities were carried out within international regulations. Prokopiou's business philosophy is characterized by taking risks and exploiting opportunities in difficult circumstances.
