French Diplomatic Source: UNIFICYP Mandate Renewal Expected Without Major Difficulties

France believes that the renewal of the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) will be possible “without major difficulties,” as it considers the force to provide a stable environment on the island. The French diplomatic source emphasized the importance of the renewal and the opportunity presented by recent developments in the Turkish Cypriot part of the island to revitalize political dialogue. France believes that the UN should take advantage of the opportunity presented by the new Turkish Cypriot leader, who is reportedly more open to a bi-zonal, bi-communal solution, and the willingness of the President of the Republic of Cyprus to reach a settlement. Paris stresses the importance of Confidence-Building Measures to facilitate talks and believes that the UN Secretary-General has the authority to pursue any possible progress. According to information, most members of the Security Council confirmed the critical role of UNFICYP and expressed satisfaction with the intensification of dialogue between the two sides, while some emphasized the importance of avoiding unilateral actions.
