France: US Assures No Invasion of Greenland

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot said he received assurances from his US counterpart, Marco Rubio, that the US has no intention of invading Greenland. France is working with other European partners to develop a plan to address potential actions by Washington. Mr. Barrot is expected to meet with the Foreign Ministers of Germany and Poland to discuss the issue and coordinate their actions. France wants to act in coordination with its European partners. The assurance came after renewed threats from former President Trump to acquire Greenland, an idea he first raised in 2019. Trump argues that Greenland is important to the US military and that Denmark has not done enough to protect it. The White House had stated that Trump was considering options for acquiring Greenland, including the possible use of the US military. Greenland, although not an independent state, is covered by Denmark's membership in NATO.
