France Urges Israel to 'Refrain' from Occupying Zone in Southern Lebanon

France is urging Israel to “refrain” from sending forces to take control of a zone in southern Lebanon, warning that such a move would have “major humanitarian consequences.” French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot expressed concern about the potential worsening of the already dire situation in Lebanon. The call comes after Israel stated that its army would take control of southern Lebanon up to the Litani River. Lebanon has been embroiled in the Middle East war after Hezbollah began launching rockets at Israel. Barrot called on Israel to take advantage of a “historic opportunity” for dialogue with the Lebanese Government, noting that Beirut has shown a willingness to address Iranian interference. The President of Lebanon, Joseph Aoun, has called for a ceasefire and the start of negotiations. France welcomed Lebanon’s decision to withdraw its approval of the Iranian ambassador’s accreditation and ban Hezbollah’s military activities, considering these measures as positive steps towards stabilizing the region.
