France: Skeleton Found Sitting Upright

In eastern France, children at a primary school discovered a skeleton sitting upright, buried in a circular pit, next to their schoolyard. This discovery is part of a series of similar skeletons found in the city of Dijon, where ancient Gauls appear to have buried some of their dead in a seated position, facing west. Archaeologists are investigating the reasons behind this unusual burial practice, even considering the possibility that the people were buried alive. The latest skeleton is remarkably well-preserved and is in a similar position to the previous ones, with hands on the knees and back against the east wall. In total, about 20 such graves have been discovered in the Dijon area, representing more than a quarter of the known graves with seated Gauls worldwide. The discovery suggests the existence of a significant Gaulish settlement in the area, however, the reasons behind this burial practice remain unknown, with possible interpretations ranging from punishment to an indication of status. Further research is expected to shed light on this mystery.
