France: First Case of Toxin Found in Infant After Consuming Recalled Milk

In France, the cereulide toxin, which led to a series of global baby formula recalls, has been detected for the first time in an infant who was hospitalized after consuming recalled milk. The toxin was present in a stool sample from the infant, but a causal link with the hospitalization has not yet been established. The case concerns the recall of dozens of batches of baby formula worldwide due to the potential presence of the toxin, which can cause severe vomiting in newborns. Three deaths and approximately ten hospitalizations have been reported in France, but the connection to the milk has not yet been clarified. European food safety authorities have announced that the risk of exposure to the toxin is now small due to the recalls.
