Former US Presidential Candidate Extradited to El Salvador

Norman Quijano, a former presidential candidate in El Salvador and convicted of bribing gangs, has been extradited from the United States and returned to his country to serve his 13-year sentence. His conviction was based on evidence showing he paid $100,000 to gangs, including MS-13 and Barrio 18, to buy votes in the 2014 presidential election. Quijano, who was mayor of the capital San Salvador and president of the Congress, had fled to the United States after losing his legal immunity in 2021. His arrest in the US and subsequent extradition send a strong message against corruption and impunity. President Nayib Bukele described the extradition as an important step in the fight against crime and corruption, recalling that Quijano was the one who handed him the presidential sash in 2019. The Bukele government has faced accusations of deals with gangs, which it vehemently denies. Since 2022, Bukele has declared a 'war' on gangs, imposing a state of emergency that allows arrests without warrants. More than 90,000 people have been arrested, although 8,000 have been released due to innocence. Despite the reduction in crime, the government's actions have been criticized for arbitrary arrests and human rights violations in prisons.
