Former Metropolitan Tychikos Suspended – Holy Synod Considers Changes to Metropolitan Elections

The Holy Synod of the Church of Cyprus is expected to suspend former Metropolitan Tychikos due to his challenge of the Synod's decisions and his appeal to civil courts. Simultaneously, Archbishop Georgios' proposal for the direct election of Bishops and Metropolitans by the Synod, without the participation of the people (who would only vote for the Archbishop), will be discussed. Additionally, the Synod will consider issuing a statement discouraging the faithful from participating in religious ceremonies organized by the defrocked monks of the Avvakoum Monastery. The case of Bishop Karpasios Christoforos, accused of transferring funds to personal accounts, is not expected to be discussed at the meeting as no official complaint has been filed with the Church. However, the issue could be raised by any Synod member for information. The possibility of Mr. Christoforos being elected to the Metropolis of Paphos is now considered low. The decision to suspend Metropolitan Tychikos is considered a certainty, as he chose to challenge the Synod's decisions and appeal to the courts. Suspension, although less severe than defrocking, effectively removes him from the Hierarchy for a long period. Metropolitan Tychikos had sent a letter to the Holy Synod expressing his intention to appeal to the courts for his reinstatement to the Metropolis of Paphos, but the letter contained a 'profession of faith' that did not meet the Synod's requirements, as it did not renounce schism and recognize all ecumenical councils.
