Foreclosure Bills Merged in Cyprus Parliament

The Cypriot Parliament is working to merge two government bills aimed at strengthening institutions and protecting borrowers from foreclosures, along with 26 proposed laws from various parties. Finance Minister Makis Keravnos submitted the legislative package to Parliament, despite initial doubts about the Ministry's readiness. He also committed to reinstating the Rent-to-Mortgage scheme with the same terms. The submission of the bills is linked to the Middle East crisis and the outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, as well as the need to maintain Cyprus's economic resilience. The bills upgrade the debt verification mechanism, introduce binding decisions by the Financial Commissioner up to €20,000, and allow earlier recourse to the Commissioner for debt confirmation. Mr. Keravnos urged parties to approve the bills before the Parliament's dissolution in April.
