For an… Irish Presidency

The author reflects on a recent visit to Ireland and observes the striking similarities between Irish and Cypriot history and culture. Despite the geographical distance, Ireland and Cyprus share common characteristics in their social, economic, and historical development. The author refers to the division of Ireland, similar to the division of Cyprus, as well as the difficulties the country faced due to the Catholic clergy and the “Magdalene Laundries.” However, he points out Ireland's ability to leave behind the traumas of the past and move towards a more progressive society, such as the legalization of same-sex marriage. Economically, Ireland pursued a policy of attracting foreign investment and becoming a tax haven, resulting in economic growth but also social problems such as homelessness. At the same time, the country has invested in promoting its culture as a factor of social cohesion and tourism development. The author emphasizes Ireland's ability to transform tension into a paradigm of peace and progress, through the promotion of its cultural heritage and the creation of a strong national branding. He compares this approach to the situation in Cyprus, where discussions about cultural identity often remain divisive.
