Foot-and-Mouth: Farmers Protest Discrepancy in Disinfection Costs

The Association of Cattle Breeders of Athienou is reacting to a letter from the Department of Agriculture regarding the financial coverage of expenses for disinfection points, as the state is committed to covering up to €5000, while farmers have already paid €6500 per automated disinfection system. The disagreement arises from the need to expand biosecurity measures in high-risk areas, with an emphasis on areas bordering the “green line” and where cases of foot-and-mouth disease have been identified. The cattle breeders of Athienou, having faced the Municipality's inability to cover the needs immediately, took on the cost of installing eight automated disinfection systems in order to prevent the spread of foot-and-mouth disease. The delay in coverage of expenses by the state, combined with the burden on farmers to cover the cost of disinfectants, is causing strong dissatisfaction in the community. The Association of Cattle Breeders of Athienou emphasizes that its members paid the cost of the disinfection systems out of their own pockets in order to protect the area from the spread of the disease. The difference between the amount covered by the state (€5000) and the actual cost (€6500) creates a financial burden for farmers. This disagreement highlights the need for better coordination and more effective financial support for farmers from the competent state services in order to ensure effective prevention and control of foot-and-mouth disease and protection of livestock production in Cyprus.
