Foot and Mouth Disease Vaccination Progress in Cyprus

Vaccinations for foot and mouth disease in Cyprus are progressing well, with 85% of cattle and 45% of sheep and goats vaccinated, according to Dr. Dimitris Epameinondas, President of the Pan-Cypriot Veterinary Association. In the free province of Famagusta, vaccinations for cattle are almost complete, while the first dose has been completed in Larnaca. It is estimated that there are approximately 500,000 sheep and goats and 90,000 cattle in Cyprus. Emphasis is being placed on vaccinating large livestock farms and those near pig farms, due to the susceptibility of pigs to the virus. Efforts are underway to import vaccines for pigs from Germany. Completing vaccinations for sheep and goats is a priority.
