Foot-and-Mouth Disease: Vaccination of Vulnerable Animals Begins Today

Vaccinations of vulnerable animals against foot-and-mouth disease began today in Cyprus, following the detection of cases. Spokesperson for the Veterinary Services, Sotiria Georgiou, announced that halloumi exports have been secured and no new cases have been reported. Vaccinations will be carried out by private veterinarians, initially with 10,000 doses of vaccines from the occupied territories, with an additional 529,000 doses expected from the European Commission. The process will focus on cattle and sheep within the ten-kilometer surveillance zone, with an emphasis on the three kilometers from the outbreak point. A meeting with EU experts, veterinarians and the Veterinary Services will be held to develop a broader vaccination plan. The Minister of Agriculture will meet with stakeholders to discuss measures to support livestock farmers. Ms. Georgiou explained that vaccines are ordered immediately after the virus is confirmed and that the virus serotype is SAT1, as in the occupied territories, with samples sent for further analysis.
