Foot-and-Mouth Disease: Vaccination of 65,000 Cattle Completed in Occupied Territories

The first dose of vaccination has been completed for approximately 65,000 cattle in the occupied territories, as part of efforts to contain foot-and-mouth disease. The process was carried out by 30 teams, and the administration of the second dose is scheduled for the next 21-30 days. The Turkish Cypriot 'veterinarians' association' announced that the measures decided after the detection of a case in December are binding. However, there have been reports of poor implementation of the measures by 'local authorities', with reports of disinfection points operating below capacity or lacking materials. Particular concern is expressed about the risks from the import of agricultural vehicles and equipment from Turkey, where the disease is on the rise. Turkish Cypriot veterinarians are calling for strict controls at entry points and are considering restricting commercial activities to protect livestock.
