Foot-and-Mouth Disease: Two More Infected Units in Larnaca, First Case in Meneou

Two new cases of foot-and-mouth disease have been announced in Larnaca, bringing the total number of infected units to 44. The new infections concern a unit of 16 sheep and goats in Dromolaxia and a unit of cattle with 193 animals in Meneou, within the already defined infected zone. The Veterinary Services continue epidemiological investigations, sampling, tracing and laboratory tests. The vaccination has reached 89% of cattle units and 65% of sheep and goat units throughout Cyprus, while the second repeat vaccination has also begun. At the same time, animal deaths in Livadia continue, with approximately 21,000 sheep and goats and 2,000 cows already having been culled. The Veterinary Services and the Police are cooperating to detect illegal animal movements. Four cases of illegal trafficking have already been identified and the authorities are taking the prescribed measures. The situation is being closely monitored and efforts to contain the spread of the disease continue with increased intensity.
