Foot and Mouth Disease: 'Situation Manageable for Halloumi Production'

The situation with foot and mouth disease in Cyprus is considered manageable for halloumi production, according to a spokesperson for the Cheese Producers Association. Although the culling of 13,000 animals is concerning, initial indications suggest that production can continue without significant disruption, provided the spread of the disease is contained at current levels. The situation is being closely monitored, as the loss of animals will affect milk production and, consequently, halloumi production. The spokesperson emphasized that members of the Association have taken strict biosecurity measures since December, when the first case was detected in the occupied territories. Cheese producers have tightened protection measures in their units to prevent the spread of the disease. Approximately 80% of milk production in Cyprus is destined for halloumi production, and milk collection takes place from all regions. The spokesperson reassured consumers that products produced in Cyprus are absolutely safe for consumption. There is no cause for concern, as controls have been increased and no prophylactic vaccinations are being carried out. The government has started vaccination within a 3-kilometer radius around the surveillance zone. The Minister himself responded to criticism regarding the handling of the situation, emphasizing that controls have been increased. The spokesperson for the Cheese Producers Association called on everyone to contribute to the effort to limit the spread of the disease, emphasizing the importance of cooperation and compliance with biosecurity measures.
