Foot and Mouth Disease Outbreak: New Cases Detected in Cyprus

Eleven new livestock units in Livadia and Oroklini have been infected with foot and mouth disease, bringing the total number of infected units to 22. The number of infected animals is estimated to reach 16,000, taking into account births. Simultaneously, the distribution of 529,000 doses of vaccines, which arrived in Cyprus from France, to private veterinarians has begun in order to start the vaccination process. The authorities are proceeding with the procedures of culling animals in infected units, sampling, and vaccination, with an emphasis on the Livadia and Aradippou areas. The distribution of cases is concentrated within the already defined infected zone, which is considered positive. The new cases involve approximately 2,000 animals in Livadia and 200 livestock in three small units in Oroklini. The government emphasizes the importance of livestock farmers adhering to biosecurity measures to protect their property and contain the spread of the disease. Since December 15th, preventive measures have been taken, and the situation is being closely monitored by the competent authorities, with the participation of the Minister of Agriculture and 513 other people at the 'Zenon' Coordination Center and other control points. The distribution of vaccines to veterinarians began immediately after their arrival and ensuring appropriate storage conditions. Statements by Senior Veterinary Officer Sotiria Georgiou emphasize the dynamic nature of the data and the need for continuous monitoring. It is also mentioned the care required due to the breeding season, when many animals are intended for slaughter in view of Easter.
