Foot-and-Mouth Disease Outbreak Hits Lesbos, Same Strain as Cyprus and Turkey

Lesbos is in a state of emergency due to an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease, with five confirmed cases in seven farms. The virus strain identified is the SAT1 serotype, the same one affecting Cyprus (since February 19th) and Turkey (initially in the occupied territories in December). The situation is critical, with the immediate culling and sanitary burial of 1,535 animals (1,459 sheep and goats, and 76 cows) in the infected farms. Authorities have established a 3-kilometer protection zone around the infected farms, with strict restrictions on animal movements. The distribution of fresh meat, milk, and dairy products from the area is subject to special permits. The identification of the SAT1 strain indicates a widespread distribution of the virus in the Eastern Mediterranean. In Cyprus, confirmation of the SAT1 strain was made through laboratory analysis at the EU Reference Laboratory (EURL). Samples are being collected from sheep and goats for further characterization of the virus. The government has taken measures to limit the spread and protect livestock. This development raises concerns about the impact on livestock farming and the economies of the two islands, as well as the potential for further spread of the virus to other areas of Greece and Cyprus. Authorities are urging farmers to strictly adhere to preventive measures and report any suspected cases immediately.
