Foot-and-Mouth Disease: Farmers Protest Culling of Asymptomatic Animals in Cyprus

Farmers in Larnaca have staged a protest, objecting to the Veterinary Services' order to cull animals that they claim are asymptomatic for foot-and-mouth disease. The farmers accuse the authorities of failing to take preventative measures after the virus appeared in the occupied territories and of a lack of transparency and information, arguing that the culling decisions are being made arbitrarily, without written decisions and without the possibility of appeal. Farm owner Nikoula Georgiou emphasized that the culling is taking place on farms where there is no active virus, and accused the authorities of arbitrariness and lack of scientific evidence. They demand an immediate suspension of the culling, written opinions, transparency and the implementation of measures such as quarantine and repeat testing. Farmers like Spyros Chatzikyriakos express their confusion about the culling of animals that have antibodies and appear to have acquired immunity to the disease. They demand that their codes be blocked at the veterinary office until the situation is clarified, while others, such as Nikolaos Dimitriou, speak of a 'pure murder' of animals that do not show symptoms. The Veterinary Services respond that the culling of animals on farms with foot-and-mouth disease outbreaks is mandatory, and no deviation is foreseen from the moment there is a positive case. They state that protocols are being taken into account and that decisions are based on scientific data and aim to protect public health.
