The President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, met with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, in Brussels, where they discussed a range of important issues. The central topic was the EU's response to the foot-and-mouth disease crisis, with a promise of financial support and preventative measures for future crises. President von der Leyen expressed her solidarity with Cyprus. In addition, they discussed the Cyprus issue, ahead of contacts with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, developments in the Middle East, aid received by Cyprus from EU member states, Cyprus's progress towards joining the Schengen Treaty, financial support for Lebanon, and the potential hosting of an Israel-Lebanon meeting in Cyprus. President Christodoulides described the meeting as very substantial, emphasizing the Commission's response to the request for financial support to address the foot-and-mouth disease and reactivate the livestock sector. He also referred to measures that the Commission will take to protect Cyprus from future livestock crises. Regarding the Cyprus issue, President Christodoulides stressed the prospect of resuming negotiations and making the most of the time remaining until the end of the UN Secretary-General's term. He reiterated the readiness of the Cypriot Presidency to restart negotiations based on the agreed framework and negotiating acquis, regardless of domestic political developments.
