Foot-and-Mouth Disease: Compensation of up to €50,000 for Farmers

The Council of Ministers approved the payment of an advance of up to €50,000 per livestock unit affected by foot-and-mouth disease, depending on the number of animals, as a first and immediate support to farmers. The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Maria Panagiotou, stated that the decision reflects the government's determination to support the primary sector. In addition, a special committee was established with the participation of representatives from the Veterinary Services, the Department of Agriculture, the Agricultural Research Institute, as well as farmers and agricultural organizations. The committee will work to determine a personalized compensation package for each farmer. The Minister mentioned that disease-free areas in other countries have been identified, so that it is possible to transfer animals to Cyprus, after the disinfection and complete clearance of the affected areas. The goal is to make the advance payment immediately and to fairly compensate the farmers, so that they can return to production as soon as possible. The Minister assured that no farmer will be left alone facing their financial obligations and that the state will stand by them. At the same time, she mentioned that the Police are investigating the origin of the infection from feed, but the priority is to support the farmers.
