FOB Test: A Screening Method for Preventing Colon Cancer

March is internationally recognized as Colon Cancer Awareness Month, aiming to raise public awareness about a disease that is the third most common cancer in both men and women in Cyprus. Approximately 395 new cases are recorded annually in the country, and over 1.3 million people are diagnosed worldwide each year. Early diagnosis is crucial, as the disease often presents no obvious symptoms in its initial stages. Colonoscopy remains the primary diagnostic method, but the Fecal Occult Blood Test (FOBT/FIT) offers a simple, painless, and reliable alternative capable of detecting traces of blood invisible to the naked eye. A positive result requires further investigation, while a negative result necessitates annual repetition. The Ministry of Health has implemented a population screening program for colon cancer, and the example of Greece, with funding from European funds and collaboration between the public and private sectors, can serve as a model for other countries. The utilization of European funds and cooperation between public and private sectors are vital for prevention and early diagnosis. The FOB test does not replace colonoscopy but serves as an initial, easy step for early detection. The process is simple, requiring only a small stool sample for laboratory analysis. The appropriate test is selected by the attending physician, considering factors such as age, medical history, and symptoms. In conclusion, colon cancer is a disease that can be prevented and effectively treated with early diagnosis. Public awareness and access to preventive screenings are vital for reducing mortality and improving the quality of life for patients.
