Flu Surge in the US Driven by New Variant

The United States is experiencing a rapid increase in flu cases, primarily due to a new variant of the virus known as subclade K. This variant has also caused outbreaks in other countries, including the United Kingdom, Japan, and Canada. As of December 20th, there have been 7.5 million cases, 81,000 hospitalizations, and 3,100 deaths, including pediatric fatalities. New York State is facing particularly high numbers of cases, the highest since 2004. Experts emphasize that vaccination remains crucial for flu protection, as it can significantly reduce the risk of severe illness, and antiviral medications are available for high-risk individuals.
