Flu Deaths Rise to 13 in Cyprus, Including a 54-Year-Old

The number of flu-related deaths in Cyprus has risen to 13, with the latest victim being a 54-year-old man who passed away in a private hospital. This increase is concerning, as the flu appears to have broken the age barrier of the elderly, also affecting younger individuals with underlying health conditions. Six of the latest deaths have been recorded in recent days, with five occurring over the weekend. According to the Deputy Director General of the Ministry of Health, Dr. Elisavet Konstantinou, most of the victims are elderly individuals over 80 years of age with multiple comorbidities. However, the death of the 54-year-old is an exception and highlights the need for vaccination and preventive measures. Dr. Konstantinou stated that the epidemic appears to have reached its peak and is beginning to subside, with a decrease in cases and hospitalizations. Nevertheless, the healthcare system remains under pressure, both in the public and private sectors, due to the increased burden from respiratory infections. The Ministry of Health assures that there is an adequate supply of antiviral drugs and diagnostic tests, and a large number of flu vaccinations (over 145,000) have been administered. It is recommended to continue vaccination and adhere to protective measures, such as frequent hand hygiene and avoiding close contact with individuals exhibiting flu symptoms.
