Finland Releases Ship Linked to Russia After Subsea Cable Probe

Finnish police have lifted the detention of the cargo ship Fitburg, which is linked to Russia, following an investigation into potential involvement in the sabotage of an undersea telecommunications cable in the Gulf of Finland. The investigation is ongoing, but police have completed their inspection of the vessel. The Fitburg was detained on December 21st while sailing from Russia to Israel, and one crew member was held for questioning. The Baltic Sea region is on high alert due to repeated disruptions to energy and communication infrastructure following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, with NATO bolstering its presence in the area. Although the ship has been released, some crew members remain subject to travel restrictions.
