FIFA Embraces AI for Offside Technology at 2026 World Cup

FIFA has announced the full implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) in its semi-automated offside system for the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The new technology includes the creation of 3D avatars of players through high-precision digital scanning, enabling more accurate and faster offside detection, even in challenging conditions. The system will track the positions and movements of players' limbs in real-time, reducing human error and providing immediate support to VAR. FIFA also aims to improve the transparency and understanding of offside decisions by the public, integrating the 3D avatars into the television signal. The technology has already been tested in previous FIFA competitions, such as the Intercontinental Cup, and is considered ready for implementation in a tournament as large as the 2026 World Cup. The tournament will be the largest technological test in football history, with 104 matches and 48 national teams. In addition, FIFA presented the Football AI Pro platform, a data analysis tool that will be available to all national teams, providing equal access to advanced statistics and analysis. Furthermore, the referee body camera (Referee View) has been upgraded with AI-based stabilization software for clearer images.
