Fears for Hundreds Dead in Migrant Boat Wrecks in the Mediterranean

Fears are growing for hundreds of deaths in migrant boat wrecks in the Mediterranean, as the fate of many people is unknown following reports of several wrecks in the past ten days, amid adverse weather conditions. The deaths of three people in Lampedusa have been confirmed, including two twin one-year-old girls, due to hypothermia. Survivors report that another vessel has disappeared, while the IOM is trying to verify information about a wreck with more than 50 people on board and at least 51 dead off Tobruk. The IOM condemns the trafficking of migrants in unseaworthy vessels, emphasizing that organizing departures during a storm is a criminal act. Last year, at least 1,340 people lost their lives in the central Mediterranean.
