Farmers Protest New Foot-and-Mouth Measures

New measures implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture to protect animals from foot-and-mouth disease are causing strong reactions among livestock farmers in the Timi and Anarita areas of Paphos. The decision to limit the opening of passages, specifically from 5:00 AM to 7:00 AM, creates serious problems in the operation of livestock units, as farmers believe they need free access to their facilities at any time of the day. Farmers point out that the measures do not take into account the needs of the profession, especially during the calving season, where the continuous presence of owners is essential. Delays in returning to farms can lead to significant financial losses, while there is no clear answer as to who will cover the cost of this situation. Despite contacts with the Department of Agriculture, farmers say they received vague answers and found a lack of flexibility. They request that there be no policing during the day, as they are able to control access to their units and believe that policing should be limited to nighttime hours. Farmers emphasize that they were the first to take protective measures, as they have no interest in the spread of foot-and-mouth disease. The implementation of the measures forces them to move to their units "like thieves", while they believe that the measures should primarily target external visitors and not the owners of the units.
